Essay of the Winner of the Contest, Vladyslav Kolisnyk.
The energy security of Ukraine means ensuring a sustainable and reliable energy supply for economic growth and vital economic activity, as well as for the comfort and well-being of citizens. It means the availability of sufficient domestic energy resources, efficient and developed energy infrastructures, and an ability to provide energy irrespective of external suppliers. In addition, energy security includes diversification of energy sources and improving energy efficiency.
Strengthening the energy security of Ukraine is of high importance for several reasons:
Economic growth: A stable energy supply is a critical factor for the country’s economic growth. Continuous supply interruptions may result in production stops, increased production costs, and decreased national enterprise competitiveness in international markets.
Geopolitical independence: Accountability of energy resources and ability to diversify the suppliers. Ukraine has to avoid geopolitical pressure and manipulations from other countries that can impact sovereignty and independence.
Stability of the society: Insufficient energy supply may result in mistrust of citizens of the authorities and can cause social protests and instability in society.
As separate individuals, we may not be strong enough to impact the country’s energy security directly but everyone can contribute:
Energy efficiency: Decreased energy consumption in everyday life can help reduce pressure on the country’s energy system. Utilizing energy-efficient devices, decreasing energy losses, and transitioning to a “green” way of life contribute to the preservation of resources.
Support for alternative energy sources: Support for the development and utilization of alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric power, and biofuel helps to expand energy sources and reduce dependence on conventional resources.
Energy education: Enhancing citizens’ awareness of energy issues and efficient energy use is essential. Education in the energy efficiency sector and the development of alternative sources may contribute to understanding the importance of energy security.
