During February-April 2023, USAID Energy Security Project (ESP) delivered 48 mobile boiler houses (MBHs) to 11 oblasts in Ukraine to back up heat and hot water supplies in case of damage or destruction of existing heating facilities.

The mobile boiler houses work on solid fuels and are equipped with a boiler, pumps, a water purifying system, a power supply system, pipelines and fittings, drainage, and a generator. Boilers operating on solid fuel are highly energy efficient and are one of the best alternatives to gas heating. They allow for minimizing gas consumption, which is necessary given Ukraine’s limited capacity to extract domestic natural gas reserves.

Zaporizhzhia and Oblast received fifteen mobile boiler houses; five MBHs were delivered to Kharkiv, three to Sumy, two to Khmelnytsyi, four to Poltava, five to Lutsk, six to Kropyvnytskyi & Oblast, one to Chernihiv, three to Mykolayiv, one to Lviv and three to Odesa.

This aid, worth over $5.6 mln, will help 11 municipalities provide hospitals, elderly care, and disabled facilities with steady heat and hot water supplies during emergencies and shutdowns. The assistance will also make Ukraine’s heating infrastructure more energy resilient, diversify heating sources, and strengthen the country’s energy security.
