27 of Ukraine’s best energy management experts completed the online four-day intensive Certified Energy Manager Course. The course was organized with support from the USAID Energy Security Project (ESP) jointly with the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine and the Ukrainian branch of the U.S. Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).
One of the primary goals of this course was to develop the potential of energy management across various regions of Ukraine. It was also intended to enhance the institutional capacity of the energy management systems at the national, regional, and local levels of governing, as well as local utility companies. This will contribute to the recovery of the energy sector of Ukraine and ensure sustainable development of Ukraine and local territorial communities.
USAID ESP Deputy Chief of Party Dmytro Ingul noted in his welcoming speech that the Project supported the Government of Ukraine, oblast administrations, municipalities, and utilities in the energy transition. It enhances local communities’ energy resilience, building sustainable local energy systems and decarbonization.
Maria Malaia, First Deputy Head of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving, highlighted the important role of energy management as the pivot point for the local authorities, communities, and businesses in sustaining local energy systems and effective energy consumption. “Every year, the demand and requirements for energy managers increase, particularly in Europe. The new EU Energy Efficiency Directive requires certified energy systems to be introduced at all industrial facilities, consuming over TJ 85 per year. It may not seem a lot, considering the scale of industries in Ukraine,” noted Ms. Malaia. She added that such training organized by USAID ESP is relevant and essential to strengthen the country’s energy security.
This training was the first internationally recognized course to certify Ukrainian energy managers for the last seven years. The certified trainers of the AEE Ukrainian branch acquainted the participants with energy audit tools, energy norms and standards, key principles of energy contracts, energy accounting and benchmarking, management of energy generation and consumption, cogeneration, renewable energy sources, and economic analysis. They also discussed life-cycle cost valuation.
Upon completion of the course, the participants could take a test under the supervision of the authorized AEE representative. Based on the results of the examination sheets verification at the AEE headquarters in Atlanta (Georgia, USA), the most successful participants from Ukraine will receive an internationally recognised certificate and the title of Certified Energy Manager.
